Cheers & Jeers

by Damian Holbrook

Jeers to ABC
for stealing our lives. We’ll never get anything done now that its streaming service has binge-worthy throwbacks like Brothers & Sisters, Felicity and My So-Called Life. Do you know how much time Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto, with Claire Danes) requires?

Jeers to Roadies
for a critical misstep. The already flat comedy about a rock band’s backstage team went totally off-key with a subplot that saw a music critic (The Office’s Rainn Wilson) drugged by the crew, then sexually molested by a groupie over his nasty review. Since you’re clearly tone-deaf, we’ll say this loudly: Rape is not funny. Ever.

Cheers to Seth Meyers
for getting to the crux of the Matter. The Late Night host has always been a hilarious voice of reason, but his July 11 “Closer Look” at Black Lives Matter was a serious piece of truth that rightfully put divisive politicians and media outlets on blast for using racial violence to raise their own profiles.

Cheers to Difficult People
for its delightful casting. As if Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner’s wickedly nasty New Yorkers weren’t already priceless nightmares, the second season has given us Tina Fey, Megan Hilty, John Mulaney, Nathan Lane and Sandra Bernhard in guest turns so worth those monthly Hulu fees.
