HELMETTA — When Mayor Christopher Slavicek came into office in January, he said he perceived a yearning from residents to be kept informed of the happenings within the borough.
That’s when he thought of creating “The Helmetta Herald” newsletter.
“There have been newsletters in the past, however, not on a consistent basis,” Slavicek said. “Throughout my term, the publication will remain consistent in a transparent way of leadership.”
The mayor said he is a firm believer that communication is a huge component of success.
“In a small municipality as such, it is imperative to keep folks abreast of the positive headlines to bring the community together and stand united,” he said. “I want to make even more of an effort to include milestones and accomplishments of our borough residents as well. The department heads and Borough Council committees have the opportunity to share announcements and information to be included.”
The newsletter will be circulated on a quarterly/seasonal basis with summer, fall, winter and spring editions. It will be mailed with the water bills, canvassed on social media, posted on the borough website and available in hard copy at the clerk’s office.
“I provide the headlines, draft the articles, and a volunteer graphic designer graciously creates the layout,” Slavicek said.
The summer issue has hit the press, he said, and is chock full of upcoming events and information about paying taxes, water, sewer and dog license bills online.
It has information about Slavicek’s $500 scholarship to a graduating senior who displays proven excellence, which was received by George Faud, a resident and a 2016 graduate of Spotswood High School; recognizes Sean Hudson, a resident and a recent graduate from Lackland U.S. Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas; and congratulates recently sworn-in police officer Robert Dangler.
The newsletter is produced in-house at Borough Hall with the support of employees and volunteers at a minimal cost for copies.
Slavicek said he and the council are very proud of the newsletter and have seen a huge increase in resident participation at events and programs.
“Helmetta is the small town with a big heart,” he said.
