A project to replace a portion of the roof at the Woods Road Elementary School was given the green light by the Board of Education on Monday.
Described by officials as a “necessary repair” for the safety of students and staff at the school, the project was previously approved under the 2016-17 budget.
Earlier in the year, officials hired Parette Somjen Architects to provide provisional architectural plans for the project, which is pending approval from the state Department of Education.
Board officials approved a motion to withdraw $122,700 from the district’s capital reserve fund in order to pay for the roofing project, resulting in an increase of the district’s total appropriations from $122,739,581 to $122,862,28.
According to the resolution approving the project, the roof replacement is not eligible for additional funding from the state.
Since the project was already budgeted for earlier in the year, taxpayers will not see any increase in their taxes.
The Board of Education also awarded the roof replacement contract to Barrett Roofs Inc., of Millington, at the meeting.
Barrett Roofs was one of eight contractors to submit bids for the work, though they submitted the lowest responsible bid for the project at $109,200.
