Robert Carey White, 73

Robert Carey White, 73, of Petersburg, VA, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at his residence. Born in Caracus, Venezuela, he was the son of the late Gordon and Harriet White. He attended the International School of Geneva, Switzerland, and graduated from Princeton University in 1964 with a degree in civil engineering. He then entered the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer and served aboard the U.S.S. Walker during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he returned to Princeton and earned his MFA in Architecture. Prior to moving to Petersburg, Rob lived in Princeton Junction, NJ, and retired from Salomon Smith Barney as a Managing Director. He was very active in the community and gave freely of his time and knowledge to help others. While living in Petersburg, he restored Historic Dodson’s Tavern on High Street which became his residence, served as President of the Historic Petersburg Foundation, was involved in the Petersburg Area Art League, served on the Board of Sycamore Rouge, and was a member of the Petersburg Rotary Breakfast. In addition to his parents, Rob was preceded in death by his first wife, Dianne White. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn DuBois White; daughter, Carey White and husband, Jason Maas; son, Craig White and fiancée, Ashley Griffin; grandchildren, Savannah and Jackson Maas, and Braxton White; sister, Terry White Porcelli; his beloved dog, Buckles; and devoted friend, Peyton Owens. The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Armstrong of Duke University Cancer Center, Dr. Mark Ende of Petersburg, and the staff of Crater Community Hospice for their wonderful care and tireless efforts to extend Rob’s life. A memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Christ & Grace Episcopal Church with the Reverend David Teschner, Rector, officiating.
