SOUTH AMBOY — One of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the United States celebrated a milestone last month.

Boy Scout Troop 91 of South Amboy celebrated its 100th anniversary on July 17 during their summer encampment in Clinton Township. The event took place at Camp Dill in Annandale, where the troop has been camping every summer for more than 90 years, according to a statement prepared by the troop.

The event was attended by many former and current troop members as well as their families. Six former scoutmasters were also in attendance including William Keller, who led Troop 91 from 1959-65.

The troop was chartered by the Boy Scouts of America in 1916 as Troop 1, but the name was then changed to Troop 91 by the Raritan Council in 1926.

The current leadership includes several young members as well as 20 active leaders and eight Eagle Scouts, totaling more than 600 years of scouting experience.

Weekly scout meetings take place every Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of South Amboy on Broadway, which has been the troop’s sponsor for the last 12 years.
