• On Sept. 20, Brandeis University Professor Thomas Doherty will speak about The Great American (Television) Novel. Doherty is a professor of American Studies and a cultural historian with special interests in Hollywood cinema. The luncheon in Freehold Township is sponsored by the New Jersey Region of the Brandeis National Committee. Proceeds will support research into neurodegenerative diseases. • Jersey Coast Sport Fliers, one of the largest remote control model airplane clubs in New Jersey, will host an open house at its flying field in Dorbrook Park, Route 537, Colts Neck, from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 13. • Jane Guillard, owner of Falcon Turn Daylily Garden, Southampton, and president of the Garden State Daylily Growers, will be the featured speaker at the Sept. 8 meeting of the Allentown Garden Club. The presentation will include daylily culture, forms, bloom seasons, tips and techniques, plus information about local, regional and national organizations. Guillard, who is an accomplished photographer, will share her photos of daylily gardens from Falcon Turn and other displays from around the country. • The Horsemen’s Association of Millstone Township will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Millstone Township Community Center, Stagecoach Road (next to the firehouse). • The Monmouth County Retired Educators Association is sponsoring a Members and Family Picnic at Oak Tree Lodge, Wall Township, on Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a picnic lunch, entertainment, games and activities, and socializing with friends and former colleagues. • The Allentown Public Library will host lecturer Martin Mosho as he presents “Unsung Heroines – The Role of Women in the Civil War” at 7 p.m. Sept. 8. • Vendors are being sought for a fall flea market to be held at St. John the Baptist Church, 1282 Yardville-Allentown Road, Upper Freehold Township (Allentown), from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 (rain or shine) in the church parking lot. • The Ladies of St. Joseph, Millstone Township, will sponsor a bus tour of the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., on Oct. 11. • The Jackson Premium Outlets, Route 537, Jackson, will present a summer concert series every Saturday from 1-4 p.m., weather permitting, outside the food court. The series will conclude on Sept. 3.
