Marijuana in the mail lands recipient in jail

EAST BRUNSWICK — Members of the East Brunswick Police Anti-Crime Unit developed information on a package suspected to contain a controlled dangerous substance that was being mailed to a local residence.

With the assistance of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Newark Division, the package was delivered on July 29, according to a statement prepared by the East Brunswick Police Department.

The suspect who allegedly received the package, Benjamin Luft, was placed into custody without incident.

The package reportedly contained 5 pounds of marijuana and suspected THC-laced candy. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects.

Luft was charged with multiple counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, distribution of a controlled dangerous substance and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance in a school zone.

Luft was transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick on $75,000 bail.
