New director to conduct Shrewsbury Chorale’s ‘Summer Sing’ Aug. 16

Eric Sucar
The Heart of New Jersey Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, rehearses a song at Frank DeFino Central School in Marlboro on October 28. The chorus of women singers, ranging in age from teen to 90+, was practicing for the annual concert in November.

The Shrewsbury Chorale has announced that Neil F. Brown, who served as a guest conductor, will be returning as the group’s permanent music director and will lead the annual “Summer Sing” at 7:45 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County, 1475 W. Front St., Lincroft.

As the guest conductor, Brown directed the March concert, which included Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem” and other pieces by Mozart and Haydn. He also led the June Gift Gala with famous opera choruses.

The Shrewsbury Chorale is beginning its 60th season of singing a varied repertoire of sacred and secular choral music. At the “Summer Sing,” the singing public is also invited to participate in an informal read-through of Vivaldi’s “Gloria.” The event will be accompanied by John Balme. Scores will be provided, and a $10 donation is requested.

The Chorale rehearses weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:45-10 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County. For more information, call 732-747-1362 or visit www.shrewsburychorale.org. New members are being accepted. Call 732-216-3907 for an audition.
