Sylvia Dichner Weiss , 101

Sylvia Dichner Weiss , 101 Sylvia Dichner Weiss , 101, passed away peacefully on Sunday August 7, 2016.
Sylvia was known and loved by so many in her community, not just for the work she did and the offices she held, but for her generosity of spirit and embrace of all. Among the many public roles she played, she initiated and developed East Windsor’s Senior Citizen program, was an East Windsor Township Council member, chairperson of the NJ Commission on Aging, and a long-time national board member of Elder Hostel (now Road Scholar). In recognition of her groundbreaking work, a model for senior citizen programs throughout New Jersey, the Mayor of East Windsor established an annual award in her name.
Although Sylvia only graduated from high school, she read voraciously and was a life-long learner; most people who met her were surprised to learn she didn’t have a college or postgraduate degree.
Through her long, rich life, she volunteered for everything from PTA to Girl and Boy Scouts, Hadassah, and the League of Women Voters and, more recently, to Better Beginnings in Hightstown. She also wrote a regular column for the Windsor-Hights Herald.
Born in October, 1914 in New York City, Sylvia grew up in Indianapolis, IN with her brothers Manny and Benny and her sister Goldie (Gloria). She and her late husband Isadore were married on her 21st birthday, October 27, 1935. After their marriage, they lived in Lewisburg, PA, Washington, DC, and Laurelton, Queens, then moved to East Windsor in 1972 after retirement. Over the last 25 years, she lived in Rossmoor then Meadow Lakes. Sylvia and Isadore’s four children, Mona (Gottesman), Miriam (Zwerin), Deb (Meixler) and Marc gave her 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted mother, mother-in law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Both before and after her husband Isadore passed away in 1991, she brought her extended family together as often as possible for family celebrations that are now cherished memories for everyone who attended.
Funeral services are Tuesday 1PM at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel,1534 Pennington Road,Ewing Township. Burial will follow at Perrineville Cemetery, Perrineville, NJ. The period of mourning will be observed at the Meixler residence in East Windsor Tuesday thru Thursday.
