Ten speeds and counting

You might have rode a 10-speed bicycle as a youth, but this fall motorists will be able to drive the first 10-speed truck, specifically the 2017 version of the full-size Ford F-150 pickup.

The new transmission will come mated to a revamped version of Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 engine that’s estimated to generate a stronger 450 pound-feet of torque for improved low-end and peak engine performance to maximize the truck’s burly hauling and towing abilities.

A higher-output version of the twin-turbo V6 that’s anticipated to achieve 450 horses will debut for 2017 in the F-150 Raptor off-road racer edition.

Meanwhile, the 10-speed gearbox affords quicker acceleration with improved fuel economy on the highway via three overdrive gears and a wider ratio span. Developed in conjunction with General Motors, it will also find its way into the high-performance ZL1 version of the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro sports coupe/convertible.
