RWJUH offering Diabetes Prevention Program

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset’s Community Health Department is offering a diabetes prevention program for African American adults, including those of African and Caribbean descent, called “The Power Over Diabetes: Empowering Our Brothers and Sisters.” The free 10-week program will begin Sept. 14 in Somerville and Sept. 24 in New Brunswick.

Participants will receive a Type 2 diabetes assessment by a registered nurse and meal planning and nutrition education with a registered dietitian. They will also learn tips for preparing traditional dishes in a healthy way and tips on how to be more active throughout the day.

Somerville sessions will be held at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset’s Family Practice, 110 Rehill Ave. on Wednesdays from 6:30-8 p.m. from Sept. 14 through Nov. 16. The New Brunswick sessions will be held at the Cook Student Center, 59 Biel Road on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Sept. 24 through Nov. 26.

Participants must be 18 years or older.
