There were numerous sightings of two bear cubs and a larger bear in South Brunswick on Monday.

Residents have been asked to avoid the Woodlot Park area on New Road though the bears are not posing a risk at this time, according to a statement prepared by the South Brunswick Police Department.

Two bears were also reported on Route 27 and Adams Lane in North Brunswick.

Black bears reside in all 21 counties of New Jersey, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) advises that some residents may observe black bears using yards as part of their natural travel corridors. It is important not to leave out any food or garbage that may encourage bears to linger in residential areas, officials said.

To report a nuisance black bear, call the DEP’s 24-hour, toll-free hotline at 1-877-WARN DEP (1-877-927-6337).

Call 911 only if there is an immediate threat to humans, the bear is a nuisance or the bear attacks.
