Aberdeen Day to be celebrated on Sept. 10

Mayor Fred Tagliarini and the Aberdeen Township Council have announced that Aberdeen Day 2016, the township’s annual town-wide celebration, will take place on Sept. 10, featuring events at Matawan Regional High School and additional locations around town.

Free trolley service will be offered between venues and the overflow parking lot at the Aberdeen-Matawan train station.

This year’s event will start at 8:45 a.m., with the Cambridge Park 5k Run/Walk for Owen to raise funds to build a playground for all children, specifically those 5 and under, as well as children with disabilities. Registration begins at the Aberdeen-Matawan Train Station at 7 a.m. The Run/Walk will be followed by the 15th Annual Yard Sale, Bake Sale and Snack Shack BBQ held by Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, 95 Cambridge Drive, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Special business-sponsored events, including entertainment, free food tastings, dog adoptions and sidewalk sales will take place at two shopping centers on Route 34. At the Stop & Shop center, DeMarco’s Catering and Gourmet Deli will present free food and entertainment, Stop & Shop will offer a Customer Appreciation Day and Woof Gang Bakery will host a dog adoption event.

At the Aberdeen Town Square, Livoti’s will present free food and games, the Hobby Shop will conduct a sidewalk sale and European Wax Center will offer various promotions. The Aberdeen’s Got Talent contest, sponsored by Sue McGowan of Hometown Residential Realty, will be held at the Strathmore Shopping Center on Route 34 from 3-6 p.m.

For the second year in a row, Aberdeen Day 2016 will feature free circus performances by the New Jersey Circus Center at Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School on Matawan Avenue. Performances will take place at noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. The circus is made possible by donations from a number of local businesses, including Aberdeen Plaza Station Urban Renewal/BNE Real Estate, Aberdeen Town Square, LLC, Addison Park, and Pure Recycling Solutions.

The Fiorendo Signsmondi Cliffwood Beach Community Center, 651 Prospect Ave., will hold The Grand Falloons Interactive Science Show for children in grades K-6 at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. The Family Fishing Contest at Cliffwood Beach will take place from 2-4 p.m.

The noon-4 p.m. celebration at Matawan Regional High School will remain the primary attraction, hosting a reptile show, pony rides and a petting zoo sponsored by Quality 1st Basement Systems, performances by the band Painted Young, the Providence Baptist Church Choir and A Touch of Dance, free rides for children, a classic car show, crafts, food, vendor booths, informational displays by local nonprofit organizations and more.

Platinum sponsors of the high school events are The Blue Rock Café, Columbia Bank, JCP&L and Shamrock Construction Group. Aberdeen Day will culminate with a free showing of Disney’s “Descendants” from 7:15-9:45 p.m. at Guisti Field on Archie Street in Cliffwood.
