School is starting up and so will be the scholastic athletic season for the fall of 2016.

Catch these final scrimmages of the summer.

On Sept. 1, high school football teams are holding their final dress rehearsal before the season begins in earnest.

The defending state champion and New Jersey’s top-ranked team, Middletown South, is playing a perennial state power, Piscataway, in a pre-season scrimmage in Middletown at 6 p.m.

In Little Silver, state football playoff participants from 2015, Middletown North and Red Bank Regional, play their final scrimmage at 6 p.m.

The East Brunswick and Woodbridge football teams play their last scrimmage in East Brunswick on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.

Sayreville is home to Montclair at 7 p.m. in Parlin.

Two state field hockey state powers, Shore Regional and Freehold Township, play their final pre-season scrimmage on Sept. 3 in West Long Branch.

In another match-up of state field hockey powers, Freehold Borough is the host to Allentown on Sept. 2.

For road racers, the Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix series concludes with the Pier House 5K in Long Branch on Labor Day, Sept. 5. This year marks the 13th running of the race that showcases the Long Branch beachfront.

Both Monmouth Park and Freehold Raceway are holding special racing cards on Labor Day, Sept. 5.
