A volunteer firefighter and official with a Marlboro fire company has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $60,000 as treasurer of the organization, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced.
On Aug. 29, Chester A. Jameson, 52, of Old Bridge, pleaded guilty to one count of third degree theft by deception before state Superior Court Judge David F. Bauman, sitting in Freehold, according to a press release.
In pleading guilty, Jameson admitted that between August 2009 and January 2015, he wrote more than 100 checks to himself, as well as checks payable to “cash,” totaling more than $60,000. Jameson committed these acts in his capacity as a volunteer firefighter and treasurer of the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company in Marlboro, according to the press release.
As part of the plea agreement, the state will recommend Jameson be sentenced to three years in state prison. As a public official, Jameson will be required to serve two years in prison before being eligible for parole.
Jameson has also been ordered by Bauman to forfeit his position with the fire company and he will be prohibited from holding any public office in the future. Jameson will be required to pay $60,000 in restitution, according to the press release.
Attorney James Fagen of Freehold, who represented Jameson, did not respond to a request for comment from the News Transcript.
An officer with the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company could not be reached for comment.
