Event to focus on issues of drug use, addiction and recovery

MIDDLETOWN — September is National Recovery Month, and The Middletown Arts Center will host the second annual New Jersey Celebrates Recovery from 1-6 p.m. Sept. 18 at 36 Church St., Middletown.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required at www.CelebrateRecoveryNJ.com.

The event seeks to remove the stigma associated with substance-use disorders and drug use and will feature a full range of art, entertainment, music, face painting, giveaways and food samplings from area restaurants.

The special guest will be Stanton Peele, J.D., Ph.D., who is an internationally renowned expert on drug use, addiction, harm reduction and drug policy.

“We hope that families will take advantage of having direct access to an expert on addiction and drug policy, especially as Stanton Peele can point out how our approach to the issue of drug use actually causes the harms we fear the most,” said Randy Thompson of Help Not Handcuffs, the nonprofit organizing the event.
