MANALAPAN – The Manalapan Police Department has added two new recruits.

During the Sept. 7 meeting of the Township Committee, two men were sworn in to serve as Class II special law enforcement officers in the police department. Eric Bacany and Matthew Buono were accompanied by family members as Mayor Mary Ann Musich administered the oath of office.

According to the website njlawman.com, Class I and Class II special officers are trained in motor vehicle laws, first aid, criminal law, use of force and other basic areas. Class II special officers also receive much of the training given to a regular police officer, including firearms training. A Class II special officer has full police powers, but only while on duty.

In recent years, several individuals who were hired as part-time special officers have since been promoted to the full-time position of patrolman.

In other business, committee members voted 5-0 to adopt an ordinance that addresses the table of organization in the Manalapan Police Department. Township Attorney Roger McLaughlin said the ordinance will increase the maximum number of sergeants permitted in the police department from seven to nine. No one from the public commented on the ordinance.

And, the committee voted 5-0 to adopt an ordinance that addresses road and drainage improvements on Pine Brook Road between Winners Circle and Country Oaks Drive.

Officials said a developer constructed homes in that vicinity, but did not make scheduled road improvements. The township received $43,678 from bonds that were posted by the developer and will use the money to make the road improvements. The funds were added to the municipal budget. No one from the public commented on the ordinance.
