LONG BRANCH- A Long Branch patrolman was found unconscious on Sept. 21 after being involved in a foot chase shortly before 2 a.m.

According to a press release from the Long Branch Police Department, Officer Michael Monahan was on patrol when he noticed what he believed to be several subjects with flashlights near an abandoned building by Westwood and Bath Avenue.

Monahan, a 12-year veteran, exited his vehicle to investigate and the subjects fled. He gave chase on foot and apprehended one subject, before being struck on the back of his head and knocked unconscious.

Responding officers were unable to reach him on the radio and finally located him by spotting the light given off by his flashlight, which was on the ground. He was found face down and unconscious. He was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he remains under observation for a head injury. According to the press release, the police department is optimistic for Monahan’s full recovery.

The press release also stated: “This is another example of the sacrifices that police officers endure daily, putting their lives in danger to protect the public. We are proud of Officer Monahan for his dedication to duty and hope he has a speedy recovery.”
