Police identify alleged jewelry thief

EAST BRUNSWICK – A man who allegedly stole jewelry from a home on Old Stage Road was apprehended by police.

Patrol units were dispatched to a residence on a report of a suspicious person around 11:27 a.m. on Sept. 21.

Officer Matthew Kole responded to the scene where an unknown individual allegedly jumped over the fence and then fled the area on a bicycle, according to a statement provided by the East Brunswick Police Department.

A rear door and rear window to the residence were found ajar, police said. Once inside, patrol units reportedly found the bedroom drawers rummaged through.

Ptl. David Velez observed an individual matching the suspect’s description riding a bicycle on Old Stage Road. He stopped the individual in the area of Bosko Drive and Francis Road. The suspect allegedly attempted to discard several pieces of jewelry as Velez was stopping him, according to the statement.

Felix Aviles, 57, of New Brunswick, was taken into custody and the jewelry was reportedly recovered as evidence, according to the statement.

Aviles was charged with burglary, possession of stolen property and theft. He was transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in lieu of $50,000 bail.
