South Brunswick schools announce ‘Homework Free Holidays’

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – After a year of studying homework practices, the South Brunswick School District has decided on an initiative to excuse students from homework during certain holidays.

Last year, the South Brunswick School District began a study of current homework practices. Data was gathered — both qualitative and quantitative — best approaches were studied, and a set of recommendations were set forth, according to information provided by the school district.

There will now be three district-wide, homework-free periods of time during the 2016-17 school year: Nov. 23-27 for Thanksgiving, Dec. 23-Jan. 2 for winter break and April 10-17 for spring break. No assignments will be due nor tests given on the day of return on Nov. 28, or before the dates of Jan. 5 or April 20.

The reasoning is to provide students with unencumbered lengths of time to enjoy family and friends, pursue personal interests, spend time outside, play, read, rest and restore, according to the statement released by Superintendent Gary McCartney.
