Allentown soccer teams focused on reaching state playoffs

Allentown High School’s girls’ and boys’ soccer teams stayed in the hunt for state tournament berths last week.

After losing to a resurgent Lawrence High School team, 2-1, in overtime Oct. 4, the Redbirds’ girls bounced back with victories over Hightstown High School, 4-1, Oct. 5 and Robbinsville High School, 2-0, Oct. 7 to go to 5-4 on the season.

McKinley DeAngelo, Vanessa Rodriguez, Sydney Regan and Emma Pascarella scored against Hightstown. Regan and Allyson Sloane put in the goals against Robbinsville, and Molly Regan made nine saves in goal. Alex Searing converted a pass from Kassidy Mulryne against Lawrence, while Kelsey Holt hit the game-winner in overtime.

Allentown hosted West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South Oct. 11 and plays at Princeton High School Oct. 13 and West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North the following day. The Redbirds then have a home game Oct. 17 against Ewing High School.

The boys got two big victories last week to go to 3-4-1.

Spencer Caruso, Zach Kokot and Hunter Zykowitz took shots that reached the back of the net in a 3-1 victory over Lawrence, while Caruso again struck for a goal and Max Allen put in the other in a 2-1 victory over Hightstown the next day. Joe Jurik and Chris Reed shared in the goalkeeping, stopping 11 Hightstown shots between them.

The Redbirds were scheduled to play at at New Egypt High School Oct. 11 and return home against Princeton Oct. 13 and West Windsor-Plainsboro North the following day.

FIELD HOCKEY

Allentown strengthened its bid for a home field game in the state tournament by beating Notre Dame High School, 3-1, Oct. 7 on Senior Day to go to 9-2. The Noon sisters — Kristen and Caitlin — each scored a goal, and Kennedy Munster drilled home the other.

Mackenzie Hultberg’s goal lifted Allentown over Princeton, 1-0, Oct. 5. Katie White was in goal for both games, stopping three Princeton shots.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Nat Byrnes finished 46th out of 172 runners in 17:20.50 over 5,000 meters to lead Allentown’s boys team to a 15th-place finish in the team standings at the 11th annual XC Fall Classic Varsity A race Oct. 8 in Jamesburg.

Matt Gregor was timed in 17:31.60 for 64th, and Charles Carey finished in 17:34.90 for 68th.

Other Allentown finishers included Thomas Bethea (100th in 18:03.40), Matt Kaminstein (108th in 18:09.60) and Colin Harvey (109th in 18:10.60).

In the girls’ Varsity A race, Devon Hoernlein finished in second place out of 150 runners in 18:59.40, as Allentown finished sixth in the team standings. Sara Gutter was 10th in 19:56.80.

Other Allentown finishers included Jamie Crowe (45th, 21:16.0), Isabella Walker (67th, 21:51.90), Jesse Bragger (70th, 21:57.50) and Georgia Borkowski (79th, 22:08.20).

Chris Shaw ran 18:36.60 for eighth place, as Allentown finished fifth in the Boys’ Junior Varsity B race team standings. Garett Baldwin’s time of 14:15.60 over 2.5 miles was good for 13th place, as Allentown finished third in the Boys’ Freshmen race. Mike Heinz followed in 18th in 14:26.80 and Shane Tendler was 31st in 14:52.90.
