Over the past few months, I have been talking with residents all across Hopewell Township. Universally, people believe Hopewell Valley is a special place and love living here. There are steps we can take to make our community even stronger.
Last month, I attended the Seniors’ Picnic at Washington Crossing Park. A consistent theme I heard from our seniors was the desire for a new space they could call their own. They need a place to gather together with members of their community and take advantage of the wonderful programs and services available to them.
For too long, Township Committee members have been paying lip service on this issue to our seniors and the broader community, promising one thing, but voting for another when budget time arrived. In 2015, Mayor Lester and his allies voted against even modest monies to start the design process for a new center.
Recently, Committeewoman Julie Blake suggested exploring a new community and aquatics center, with dedicated space for our seniors, at the Pennington Circle, while we continue to research (in parallel) a stand-alone senior facility in another part of the township. Committeewoman Blake’s recommendation and commitment are a positive step in the right direction.
We now need to move the Township Committee beyond the talking phase, and work towards concrete actions that strengthen our community.
I am committed to breaking ground on a new community and senior center in my initial term. Between Hopewell Township and the boroughs, we have access to up to $3 million in outside monies to build a new center. We can also partner with the school district. I will take the lead in building a coalition across Hopewell Valley to cost-effectively build and operate a new center for our seniors and the broader community. I, along with Michael Ruger, will look to partner with local organizations like the YMCA and the Recreation Foundation to create a new center that appeals to all residents. Together, we can get this center built!
