Motor vehicle stop yields drugs, weapon in East Brunswick

EAST BRUNSWICK – Police allegedly found drugs and a handgun during a motor vehicle stop on Route 18.

Ptl. Ryan Welch charged two adult males and one juvenile male for possession of marijuana under 50g, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of a handgun around 11:56 a.m. on Oct. 19 near the intersection with Cindy Way, according to information provided by the East Brunswick Police Department.

Welch reportedly conducted a motor vehicle stop on a 1995 Honda Accord, which was occupied by the three males. He reportedly detected the odor of marijuana from inside the vehicle and a search of the vehicle revealed a quantity of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a loaded .22 caliber Beretta semi-auto handgun, according to police.

The two adults, James George, 19, and Alfonso Lyles, 26, both of Plainfield, were charged and transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of bail: $30,000 for Lyles and $25,000 for James. The juvenile, who was also charged, was released to his mother.
