PRINCETON: University student charged with unlawful possession of a weapon

Princeton University student Samuel Smiddy, 22, has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon for having a shotgun in his possession, according to the Princeton Police Department.
Police were alerted by a concerned citizen at 9:29 a.m. Oct. 22 that Mr. Smiddy had a shotgun. When police investigated, they discovered he had a shotgun and had possessed it while he lived at the Cloister Inn, an eating club on Prospect Avenue.
The investigation showed that while he did have a shotgun in his possession, he did not meet the legal requirements to possess it, police said. The investigation also showed that he did not possess it on the Princeton University campus.
Mr. Smiddy was arrested at 10:41 a.m. Oct. 22 and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. He was released on his own recognizance, pending a court appearance. 
