LINCROFT — Julie Otsuka, author of the award-winning 2002 novel, “When the Emperor Was Divine,” will hold an interactive presentation 7 p.m. on Nov. 17 at Brookdale Community College, 765 Newman Springs Rd.

The event, which will feature a lecture by Otsuka, a Q-and-A session and book signing, is part of the 2016 Brookdale Read initiative that is co-hosted by the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education (Chhange); Brookdale’s International Education Center, Office of Student Life and Activities and Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution; and the Middletown Township Public Library.

Otsuka is the winner of the PEN/Faulkner and Asian American Literary awards, recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a finalist for the National Book Award. Her novel, which follows one family’s experiences in Japanese internment camps during World War II, is the centerpiece of this year’s Brookdale Read, an annual initiative designed to spur community-wide discussion on significant social issues.

Brookdale students, faculty and community members are encouraged to read the novel and participate in a series of free film screenings, panel discussions, guest lectures and other events offered through November.

Community members of all ages are invited. General admission is $5. Parking is available in lots 6 and 7. For more information, call 732-224-2788 or visit www.chhange.org for a complete list of upcoming events.
