ROBBINSVILLE — Shore Regional High School and Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) were among six high schools from New Jersey that received this year’s ShopRite Cup.
The award, presented by ShopRite and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), recognizes the top high school athletic program in each of New Jersey’s six group classifications.
Shore, which is located in West Long Branch, was the winner in Group I, which is the group that contains the smallest enrollment of students for public schools.
CBA, which is located in Lincroft, finished first in Non-Public A, which has the larger enrollments of the state’s two non-public divisions.
Throughout the 2015-2016 school year, athletic programs accumulated points based on performance in championships in the 32 NJSIAA-sanctioned sports. Schools also received three additional points per season whenever none of their student-athletes or coaches was disqualified.
The final point standings are as follows:
- Group I: Shore Regional High School (Monmouth County) — 54 points.
- Group II: Haddonfield Memorial High School (Camden County) — 97 points.
- Group III: River Dell Regional High School (Bergen County) — 64 points.
- Group IV: Ridge High School (Somerset County) — 62 points.
- Non-public A: Christian Brothers Academy (Monmouth County) — 165 points.
- Non-public B: Villa Walsh (Morris County) — 121 points.
Points were doubled at the non-public, single-gender schools.
“We are proud to honor these six scholastic athletic programs, with an emphasis on their student-athletes,” said Steve Timko, NJSIAA executive director. “These outstanding young people exhibit exceptional sportsmanship and dedication, which are prime reasons their schools’ athletic teams have been so successful.”
A member of the National Federation of State High School Associations, the NJSIAA conducts tournaments and crowns champions in 32 sports.
Championship competition for girls is sponsored in basketball, bowling, cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, outdoor track, winter track and volleyball.
Boys’ championships are determined in baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, fencing, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, outdoor track, winter track, volleyball and wrestling.
