EDISON — A 20-year-old township man was charged last week with vehicular homicide in the motor vehicle crash that killed a 93-year-old township man in July, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Police Chief Thomas Bryan.

Joseph Petrillo was charged during an investigation by Detective Michael Felcetto of the Edison Police Department and Detective Erik Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

His bail was set at $35,000, according to police.

During the investigation, it was determined the defendant was traveling north at a high rate of speed on Route 27 near the Peterson Avenue intersection in Edison and was unable to stop before striking Luis Figueroa’s vehicle on July 25, police said.

The victim, who was driving a 1995 BMW sedan, was heading south on Route 27 and was attempting to make a left turn when he was struck by the defendant, who was traveling north in a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck, police said.

Figueroa was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The investigation is active and continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Felcetto of the Edison Police Department at 732-248-7400 or Detective Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3263.
