PLUMSTED – Local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are reminding members of the community they will be collecting non-perishable food items this weekend, Nov. 12-13.

According to Scoutmaster Dave Menaker, all of the food that is collected will be distributed to two food pantries in New Egypt – the Helping Hands Pantry, sponsored by the Christian Fellowship Church of New Egypt, 76 Evergreen Road, and the Community Food Pantry at the Plumsted Presbyterian Church, 14 Front St.

During the weekend of Nov. 5-6, the scouts went house to house and distributed plastic bags to members of the community. The scouts are asking their friends and neighbors to support them in their attempt to help individuals and families who may struggle to put food on their table.

Menaker said about 100 Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from New Egypt have been participating in the the annual Boy Scouts of America Scouting for Food Drive. He said the food drive is a great way for scouts to get involved with their community.

“Community service is a founding principal of scouting,” Menaker said. “All Scouts, at all age levels, are eager to participate and help with service projects. It reinforces that scouts ‘help other people at all times’ and should ‘do a good turn daily.’ “
