“Birding by Impression: A Different Approach to Knowing and Identifying Birds” is the title of their new book in the Roger Tory Peterson Reference Series at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers (April 2015). The focus of this multi-media presentation provides a more holistic approach to birding that includes right- and left-brain strengths to enhance birding skills as well as to gain a greater awareness of a bird’s behavior.

Unique digitized or real-life photos from their book are used to encourage the audience to spot differences between similar species in direct side-by-side comparison. This approach concentrates on basic impressions of size, body shape, structural features and motion to form an accurate first impression of birds, with analysis of plumage details and non-feathered areas. A few videos and music will allow for a relaxed appreciation of the beauty and intriguing nature of birds.

Dale and Kevin’s book will be available for purchase and signing after their program.

The Monmouth County Audubon Society, a chapter of the National Audubon Society, is dedicated to the enjoyment and study of nature, wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and education.

Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month Sept. through May at the Knights of Columbus hall, 200 Fair Haven Rd., Fair Haven; guest speakers address a wide variety of nature-related topics, and refreshments are provided. In addition, the group sponsors at least one field trip per month, and members receive The Osprey, the club’s bi-monthly newsletter.
