DWI charge lodged following incident in Jackson

JACKSON – Multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, were lodged against a Jackson man during an incident that occurred on the morning of Nov. 4.

Police said the identity of the man who was arrested is being withheld at this time because there are victims and other individuals who are parties in specific incidents involving the man.

Police said the man attempted to harm himself while he was in police custody and threatened to do harm to an officer’s family.

At 9:30 a.m., officers Jeff Henba, Chris Kelly, Chris Wasnesky and Brad Reider responded to a convenience store on Leesville Road to investigate a report of a man who was acting in an erratic manner, according to police.

The officers identified the man as a person who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for simple assault in Jackson and arrested him.

Police said the man claimed his pickup truck had become disabled in the convenience store’s parking lot and that he had been trying to fix it. The officers observed that the man appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance.

The officers checked the pickup truck and saw a glass pipe and recovered a small amount of a substance believed to be marijuana, according to police. The officers learned the man had allegedly confronted and threatened to harm an employee at the convenience store.

Police said that while the man was being processed he began to act in an erratic manner and claimed he had ingested substances including prescription medications, cocaine and heroin. The man said he needed to go to a hospital.

Personnel from Quality First Aid responded to police headquarters to treat the man, but he became confrontational with them and refused further treatment, according to police.

Police said the man was subsequently placed in a holding cell and was observed removing his pants and tying them around a bed frame in an attempt to harm himself.

He was stopped from doing that and was then observed placing his hands around his neck in an attempt to choke himself, according to police. Police said when officers attempted to stop him from doing that, he made statements indicating that he wanted to harm himself.

Police said the man was transported to a hospital for treatment and evaluation and while there he attempted to spit on hospital personnel. He allegedly threatened an officer by stating that when he got out of the hospital he was going to kill the officer’s family, according to police.

The man was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, having a vehicle with an expired registration, harassment, possession of marijuana (under 50 grams) and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was initially placed in the Ocean County Jail, Toms River, with bail on the new charges set at $15,000.
