SHREWSBURY — The Allen House, a historic tavern built in the 18th century and owned by Monmouth County Historical Association, will offer music, entertainment, storytelling, and light refreshments during the annual Historic Four Corners Lantern Tours set for Dec. 2.
Two evening tours are being offered, one at 6 p.m. and one at 8 p.m., according to Association Director Evelyn C. Murphy, PhD. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Elaine Feyereisen from Christ Church, at 732-742-1227. Tickets are $20 per adult, and $8 for children 12 and under. Tours begin at the Parish House of Christ Church. The Four Corners has been designated both a National and a state Historic District.
Walk into Allen House and experience life as a weary traveler during the holidays back in the 1700s. A tavern keeper and his family will greet visitors and welcome them to tavern life in the area during the 18th century. Allen House served as a tavern, the Blue Ball, from 1754 through 1814, and was acquired by the Monmouth County Historical Association in 1968. In the past it has also served as a residential home, pharmacy, tea house, antique store, medical facility and dry goods establishment.
Monmouth County Historical Association is a private non-profit organization that has been working to preserve history and provide educational opportunities since its founding in 1898. The Historical Association’s Museum and Library is located at 70 Court Street in Freehold. Museum hours are: Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Library is open Wednesdays through Saturdays.
