No pardons for convicted drug dealers

Typing Letter to the Editor for the Opinion page.

The Nov. 30 News Transcript front page story of the tragic death of a local resident due to a drug overdose and the quick actions of police officers to save another gives rise to an analysis of President Barack Obama’s campaign to release and pardon convicted drug dealers.

Those convicted of federal drug crimes are normally major dealers, not users. President Obama’s claim that drug dealing is a victimless crime is belied by your article. Furthermore, the number of people dying from drug overdoses has increased by 137 percent since 2000, while deaths from opiods have increased by 200 percent.

Hopefully the policy of letting drug dealers out of jail early will end shortly with the change in administration and maybe more of those victims of the drug dealers will have a better chance to survive.
