Holocaust rescue mission to be topic at Dec. 14 meeting

The Brandeis National Committee, Middlesex Chapter, will present a program titled “Paul Beller and the Rescue Mission of 1939” 1 p.m. Dec. 14 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.

Beller will be on hand to tell the story of his escape from the Holocaust. In 1939, as the Nazi takeover threatened in Vienna, 8-year-old Paul Beller’s parents tried unsuccessfully to obtain visas for the family to emigrate. Meanwhile, Philadelphia attorney Gilbert Kraus was determined to save children who lived in Vienna. A documentary and a book titled “50 Children, The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus,” tells the story of the mission to save 50 children from the Holocaust in Europe.

Admission is free of charge. The public is invited to attend.

The committee’s December Social Justice Collection is a Hanukkah Toy Drive for Jewish Family Services and a magazine collection (issues no older than three months) to be donated to Saint Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Guests are asked to bring items for donation.
