The Edison Police Department will host its free academy that will start Jan. 31 and run through March on consecutive Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

The academy, held at the Edison Municipal Complex, 100 Municipal Blvd., is open to township residents, 18 years of age or older, who register before Jan. 13. Class size is limited to the first 40 residents to register for the program.

Topics covered at the Civilian Police Academy include the functions of the police department’s Operations Bureau, the Detective, Criminal Identification and Juvenile Aid Bureaus, the Special Operations Group, the Emergency Response Team, the Auxiliary Police and Emergency Management.

There will also be discussions about domestic violence, crime prevention, homeland security and personal safety and firearms safety.

Police Chief Thomas Bryan said he is extremely pleased to bring back the Civilian Police Academy that has been run in the past.

“This program enables us to reach out to people in the community we serve and help them to better understand the kind of work our police officers do each day,” he said.

Bryan added that it also gives participants a small taste of what it would be like to be an officer.

Graduates of the Civilian Police Academy will receive a diploma and are eligible to participate in a ride-along with an on-duty police officer.
