Robotics program will run from Dec. 27-29

MARLBORO – The Marlboro Recreation Community Center will host a three-day robotics program for children in conjunction with the Minds in Motion organization.

The robotics program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 27, 28 and 29 at the recreation center, Wyncrest Road.

The program is open to children ages 5 to 12. The cost is $185 for Marlboro residents and $195 for non-residents. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch, a snack and two drinks.

The program will be taught by a teacher from the K-8 school district and  students will learn how to build a jungle robot which hangs from a string. The children will also have an opportunity for exercise, including basketball and jump rope.

A flier for the program states, “Experience the world of robotics by building and taking home your very own Jungle Robot. Activated by a condenser microphone, you can send the jungle robot on its journey with the clap of a hand or the sound of your voice. You will be guided through the many steps in the assembly of this adventurous android and learn the basic principles of robotics. This battery controlled robot also features a pre-assembled circuit board, different types of gears, and a mechanical drive system. Watch your completed jungle robot swing across the room in front of all your classmates. Students will also free-build with hundreds of robotic parts. Prepare to discuss, test run and work together with other teammates as you hone your skills to take part in our Minds in Motion competitions.”

During the winter break from school, the gym at the recreation center will be open to students on days when the weather is poor.

Lynne Gustman has been working with the School’s Out program for 13 years.

“The kids love it, that is why we fill up so fast,” Gustman said. “We try to keep them busy when they don’t have school. That is what recreation is all about, the community.”
