Three Allentown High School students have been charged with drug offenses.

On Dec. 14 at 1:10 p.m., troopers from the New Jersey State Police responded to a report of three male students being in possession of illegal substances at the high school, High Street, Allentown, according to state police Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams.

Administrators from the Upper Freehold Regional School District, which includes Allentown High School, said the students were taken into custody by the troopers and brought to the state police station in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, where it was subsequently determined they would be arrested.

According to Williams, the students were in possession of more than 50 grams of a substance believed to be marijuana, drug paraphernalia and yellow pills suspected to be Xanax. All three boys are juveniles and each was charged with possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute.

Under state law, possession of more than 50 grams of marijuana is considered an indictable crime. Possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana is a disorderly persons offense.

State police did not disclose the ages or towns of residence of the three boys who were charged in the incident.

The high school is located in Upper Freehold Township and in Allentown and district administrators said incidents at the building are handled by the New Jersey State Police and not by the Allentown Police Department. Upper Freehold Township does not have its own municipal police force and is patrolled by the state police.
