Center holds book and author event

The Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County, 1775 Oak Tree Road, Edison, will hold author Armando Lucas Correa discussing his book, “The German Girl,” at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 19.

Correa was a 10-year old living in Havana when he first heard about the St. Louis, a luxury ocean liner that set sail from Hamburg, Germany on May 13, 1939, with more than 900 Jewish refugees on board who were fleeing Nazi Germany for Cuba. Turned away from Cuba (having allowed only 28 passengers to enter) the St. Louis was also turned away by the United States and Canada. Be transported from Nazi Germany to the decks of the S.S. St. Louis and the uncertain future for the “lucky ones” who were allowed entry to Havana, through Correa’s elegant prose and attention to historical detail.

The cost is $15 for JCCMC members; $19 for nonmembers, and includes coffee, bagels and more. Space is limited. Please register at the JCC by Feb. 16. No walk-ins.
