Residents required to remove snow from sidewalks

NORTH BRUNSWICK – Members of the North Brunswick Department of Community Development are reminding residents that they will be actively enforcing the municipal ordinance regarding snow removal from sidewalks.

According to the ordinance, “It shall be the duty of the owner of any residential lot … to remove or cause to be removed all snow and ice from the sidewalk area in front of or bordering upon the owner’s lands … within 24 hours of the cessation of any storm or fall of snow or ice … so that an unobstructed portion of the sidewalk area is open and cleared to a width of at least three feet.”

Homeowners found to be in violation following a snow event will first receive a warning, according to a statement released by the department. Failure to clear the sidewalk within 24 hours after the next snow event will result in a formal Notice of Violation and property owners will be subject to a municipal court summons.

Residents are encouraged to provide for the safe passage of pedestrians and school children by promptly clearing their sidewalk of snow within 24 hours of each storm, according to the statement. Commercial owners have a higher standard to remove snow and provide safe passage within 12 hours of each storm.

In all instances, the regulations also prohibit snow and ice from being thrown or deposited in any way onto or upon any street, highway, public right-of-way, sidewalk, walkway, parking lot or neighboring property, according to the statement.

Residents who identify properties with unsafe conditions are asked to call and report the locations to the department at 732-247-0922, ext. 440.
