EDISON — The Edison Police Department is continuing to seek interested residents who want to learn the ins and outs of police work through the department’s Civilian Police Academy that will begin later this month.
The free academy will start on Jan. 31 and run through March on consecutive Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Edison Municipal Complex, 100 Municipal Blvd.
The academy is open to the first 40 township residents age 18 or older who register by Jan. 13.
Topics covered at the academy will include the functions of the police department’s Operations, Detective, Criminal Identification and Juvenile Aid bureaus; Special Operations Group; Emergency Response Team; Auxiliary Police; and Emergency Management.
There will also be discussions about domestic violence, crime prevention, homeland security, personal safety and firearms safety.
Police Chief Thomas Bryan said he is extremely pleased to bring back the Civilian Police Academy, which has run in the past.
“This program enables us to reach out to people in the community we serve and help them to better understand the kind of work our police officers do each day,” he said.
Bryan added that it also gives participants a small taste of what it would be like to be an officer.
Graduates of the Civilian Police Academy will receive a diploma and are eligible to participate in a ride-along with an on-duty police officer.
