PLUMSTED – Pupils at the New Egypt Middle School have been working hard to prepare for this week’s production of “The Snow White Variety Show.”
“The Snow White Variety Show” will be presented at the middle school, 117 Evergreen Road, New Egypt, at 7 p.m. Jan 13 and 7 p.m. Jan. 14. General admission tickets will be $7.
The play will be co-directed by teachers Diane Carr and Renee Hogan.
Hogan said the play is a modern version of “Snow White.”
“Our show is ‘The Snow White Variety Show,’ a fun talk show style version of the Snow White story as told from the viewpoints of updated dwarfs,’ ” Hogan said.
“Using a talk show format, our bubbly host introduces each dwarf in turn, who then starts to tell his or her version of their experiences with Snow White.
“As they are telling the story, a troupe of actors called the Fairytale Players act out the scene as it is being told. As a result, some scenes are a little bit country, some are a little bit rock and roll and some are full of creepy mystery,” Hogan said.
“Then there is the ending, which even the host did not see coming because we all thought we knew how the Snow White fairy tale ended. Commercials featuring fairy tale lawyers and house-flippers round out this zany production,” Hogan said.
The names of the modern dwarfs are Wordy, Rowdy, Nerdy, Weepy, Creepy, Howdy and Bob.
Hogan said the play is a great way for students to display their acting skills.
“We wanted to do a comedy to show off the zany skills of our middle-schoolers,” she said. “This show was a little bit different, adding a twist at the end, and could really showcase a wide range of acting abilities and talents.”
Hogan invited everyone in the community to come and see “The Snow White Variety Show.”
“It’s a lot of fun. The music is catchy, there may be dancing in the aisles and there are even commercial breaks to keep everyone engaged. The characters are new and fresh, bringing a modern twist to the classic fairy tale,” she said.
