METUCHEN — A new painting that sits above the fireplace in the children’s room at the Metuchen Public Library fits right in.

Bears on bears on bears are reading “How to Save the Bees” in the painting by Lauren Rabinowitz, who goes by her artist name Lauren the Cartoon Goddess.

Rabinowitz said Kathy Glaser, co-director of the art gallery at the library with Cathy Tardosky, approached her in October about doing something for the space.

“I love this town,” said Rabinowitz, who said she previously lived in Metuchen and now lives in Edison. “I have one foot in Metuchen and one foot in Edison. I am active in the local art scene participating in [Metuchen’s annual] Junebug ArtFest.”

Rabinowitz said she thought about what would be appropriate for the children’s room.

“I wanted to do something to promote reading — this was simple that everyone understands,” she said.

A contest was held on social media on the name of the book that the bears are reading.

Glaser and Tardosky said they will look for a bee ornament to go with the painting.
