Gilbert Winsten

Gilbert Winsten, 91, of New York, N.Y., formerly of Freehold, died Jan. 7, in New York City.

He was born on Feb. 4, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to David and Anna Weinstein.

After graduating from James Madison High School, he served in the Army during World War II and was discharged with the rank of sergeant.

In 1947, Gil married Harriet B. Liss. After moving to Freehold, Gil and Harriet founded Hargill Supply Company Inc., a plumbing and heating supply, where Gil worked until his retirement.

The Winstens were members of Congregation Agudath Achim, Freehold.

For many years, Gil and Harriet worked with a group of like-minded parents to start and support Eden Autism Services. The first group home opened at Eden was named Winsten House.

Harriet Winsten died in 1988.

Gil is survived by two sons, Steven of Robbinsville, and Michael of Somerville; and a daughter, JoAnn Winsten of New York, N,Y. He also leaves a stepson, Brian Hoffman of Glen Gardner, and two step-grandchildren.

Gil was predeceased by his second wife, Evelyn, in 2016.

Graveside funeral services were held privately on Jan. 10 at the Freehold Hebrew Benefit Society cemetery, Freehold Township.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gil’s memory may be made to Eden Autism Foundation for Adult Services, 2 Merwick Road, Princeton, NJ 08540. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
