Manalapan library to present concerts in February

Two-time Grammy award winner Alan Broadbent and Trio featuring Harvie S will appear at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan, at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 for a jazz concert featuring music from Broadbent and other composers and arrangers of jazz.

Broadbent, a composer and arranger as well as a jazz artist and pianist, was born in New Zealand and studied there before coming to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music, according to a press release from the library. He later toured with Natalie Cole and was part of her “Unforgettable … with Love” album and wrote an orchestral arrangement for Cole’s second video.

Harvie S has recorded, performed and produced music under that name for the past 15 years and is a member of the Westchester Jazz Orchestra.

The third member of the trio, Billy Mintz, on drums, has performed with Charles Lloyd, Bill Mays and more, and has been with Broadbent and Harvie S for five years.

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 19 and seats are available on a first come, first served basis. There is no charge and no registration is required.

The musical group Follow the Drinking Gourd will present a performance from the Harlem Renaissance at the library at 2 p.m. Feb. 26.

The group will present music of Eubie Blake, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and other composers who were most popular during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s.

The musical group, comprised of Diane Goldsmith on piano, Ivan Woods, bass, and featuring soprano Beverly Owens, is named for a song reportedly used in the 19th century to guide slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, according to the press release.
