A Freehold Borough man has been charged with creating a false public alarm for allegedly texting a bomb threat to the Monmouth County 911 Communications Center in Freehold Township.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said that on Dec. 8, a threat was sent via text message from a pre-paid cell phone that claimed a bomb was in the building.

The sheriff said an investigation was launched that involved cell phone tracking and surveillance. He said the investigation led detectives to Christopher Young, 27, at a residence in Freehold Borough.

Golden said Young was arrested on Feb. 1 and charged with creating a false public alarm of a critical infrastructure, which is a second degree crime.

He said Young was a former public safety telecommunicator at the sheriff’s office and was released in October 2016, prior to his three-month probation period.

“These types of threats are taken very seriously and will not be tolerated to ensure the safety of the people who live and work in Monmouth County,” Golden said. “I commend our detectives for fully responding to this false public alarm and actively working to find out who was responsible for this disruptive and potentially dangerous threat.”
