Over the course of three nights, Matawan school teams raised nearly $2,500 for Relay for Life in Matawan to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Eric Friedman and Chris Zettell, two Matawan residents and prominent Relay for Life volunteers, found a creative way for the local schools to participate in a fundraiser. They spoke with Aberdeen McDonald’s owner Alana Marinello, who agreed to a “McTeacher’s Night” fundraiser held Jan. 11, 25 and 31.

Teachers from different schools in Matawan worked the cash register or served food to their students and families, and 15 percent of each order went to their Relay for Life team.

The students were excited to help a worthy cause and lines at times were out the door.

Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School and Matawan Regional High School raised $723; Lloyd Road Elementary School $800; and Strathmore Elementary School $906.

Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School Principal Aaron Eyler was very happy with the fundraiser and enjoyed working with the high school team on the same night.

“This is a great opportunity to help besides what we at the middle school are always trying to push our kids to be; it’s great to see not only having the event, but to work with the high school principal. Our goal was to try and get as many people involved as possible,” he said.
