EAST BRUNSWICK — A township resident was charged with multiple crimes after allegedly robbing two residences in East Brunswick.

Amy Streko, 34, was charged with two counts of burglary, one count of possession of a hypodermic syringe and hindering apprehension after being identified as the alleged burglar who entered the Milltown Road and Herbert Drive homes on Feb. 14, according to a statement prepared by the East Brunswick Police Department (EBPD).

The resident from the Milltown Road burglary was out of the country but was able to supply a picture of an unknown female suspect inside his residence, which was caught on his surveillance camera, according to police. The resident at the Herbert Drive burglary reported approximately $3,000 worth of coins taken from his residence, according to the statement.

On Feb. 17, Officer Justin Schlusselfeld was patrolling the area of Ryders Lane near where the burglaries occurred when he allegedly observed a female walking on Ryders Lane who matched the description of the female suspect caught on the surveillance video, police said. During the course of his investigation, Schlusselfeld observed that the female was allegedly in possession of gold dollar coins, which were taken from the burglary on Herbert Drive, according to police.

Streko also allegedly attempted to hinder her apprehension by providing a false name to Schlusselfeld, police said. Schlusselfeld was able to positively identify her as the female suspect from the video surveillance, according to the statement.

Members of the department’s Anti-Crime Unit assisted with a consent search at the suspect’s residence where she was staying with her boyfriend, according to reports. The search reportedly yielded an additional $500 of the stolen gold dollar coins and clothing matching what Streko was wearing during the burglary at Milltown Road, police said.

Additionally, the victim from Herbert Drive was reportedly able to identify a black bag which was taken from his residence which contained additional gold coins.

Streko also had an outstanding warrant from Somerset County, according to police.
