Matawan Council salutes fire department

The Borough of Matawan Council devoted part of its Feb. 21 meeting to honor the Matawan Fire Department.

The Council gave the Matawan Fire Department time to present awards to some of the firemen and women for going above and beyond their call of duty. 1st Deputy Chief Richard Michitsch, 2nd Deputy Chief Ed Lee and Chief Peter Berliner gave out the honors.

“We don’t get paid for any of this; we do this for the love of the fire service, for the love of the town and for the love of each other,” Michitsch said.

The Council, along with residents attending the meeting, gave the honorees a standing ovation.

Mayor Joseph Altomonte announced that Feb. 28 is World Spay Day and reminded residents to care for their pets by having them spayed/neutered to prevent unwanted litters and homeless pets.

During the consent agenda, the council redeemed tax sale certifications from Actin Holding Inc., Public Tax Investments, J&A New York Inc. and others; approved the solicitors permit renewal for Trademark Management and the fire department’s “coin toss” event; and released the escrow funds for the Trevor Kiss/Women’s Club and John G. Kerschner Jr.

Regarding new business, the council moved an authorization to advertise for a police officer for the Matawan Police Department to a future meeting while approving other resolutions, such as extending the sick leave request for Officer Christopher Stark and advertising to hire a part-time annual electrical subcode official/inspector.

There were two resolutions the council did not unanimously agree on.

Councilman Nicholas Reeve voted “no” on the resolution authorizing the County of Monmouth Mosquito Control Division to conduct aerial mosquito control operations while Councilman Joseph Urbano voted “no” on a resolution pertaining to procedures for hire by the Matawan Borough Police Department.

Five of the six members of the Council were in attendance. Michael Caldon was absent.

Nonetheless, the motions were passed and the meeting was adjourned.
