RED BANK — The Borough Council announced its entrance into a $47,000 contract with T&M Associates to continue an ongoing effort to redevelop the former Red Bank landfill into a new park at its semimonthly meeting on Feb. 22.

Councilman Erik Yngstrom explained the borough has entered into its third phase of redevelopment, describing the present status as a “remedial action plan.”

Previously, the area where the borough plans to have Sunset Park was used as a landfill and garbage-burning facility. The area where the park will be located is Sunset Avenue West.

In other business, the council proclaimed March 2 as “Read Across America” at the beginning of the borough meeting.

To celebrate this new proclamation, three primary school students, along with their families, came and read three poems to the council. After the children read their poems, Mayor Pasquale Menna proclaimed March 2 to be “Read Across America Day” for the Borough of Red Bank.

In 1998 the National Education Association celebrated “Read Across America Day” to raise awareness about the importance of reading, according to the official Borough of Red Bank proclamation.

“Read Across America” is an annual celebration that promotes literacy, reading and adult involvement in the education of pupils and celebrates the joy of reading. Pupils, parents, teachers, sports figures, celebrities, firefighters and business and community leaders are taking part in “Read Across America” events throughout the nation, according to the proclamation.

On March 2, the New Jersey Education Association and the Red Bank Borough Public Schools along with libraries, bookstores, businesses and other community organizations will commemorate “Read Across America” day.
