Mayors declare Day of Action to protect immigrants’ rights

NORTH BRUNSWICK — North Brunswick Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack joined mayors across the country in proclaiming Cities’ Immigration Day of Action.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) organized a national Day of Action on March 21, led by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, chair of the USCM Latino Alliance; Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, co-chairs of the USCM Immigration Reform Task Force; and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, chair of the USCM Mayors and Police Chiefs Task Force.

Womack joins other mayors in calling on the federal government to enact comprehensive immigration reform and enforce the nation’s immigration laws in a humane manner that does not disrupt the lives of residents, according to a statement provided by his office. It notes that in the absence of federal immigration reform, mayors and their municipalities continue to seek strategies to protect and secure all their residents while ensuring that local law enforcement is focused on community policing.

A proclamation enacted in North Brunswick acknowledges that immigrants have enriched the township’s culture, increased its productivity and innovation, heightened its quality of life and bolstered its economy, according to the statement.
