Jackson Liberty jazz band honored

JACKSON – The New Jersey Association for Jazz Education recently held a five-day preliminary competition to determine the best jazz bands in the state.

More than 50 high schools competed for the top 10 spots and Jackson Liberty High School was once again selected as one of the best and is currently ranked fifth in the state, according to a press release.

The Jackson Liberty Jazz Band has appeared in and been accepted into the finals eight times in school’s 10-year history, according to the press release.

In previous state festivals, the band has held the title of third place twice, claimed three best soloists in the state and best trombone section. At local competitions, the band has received superior rating, won soloist awards, section awards and best overall band awards, according to the press release.

“It’s an amazing thing to work toward a goal and have it realized, but by no means does this mean we are through. Now we have something else to work toward,” said senior member and section leader Alexa Weaver.

George Willis, a junior and soloist, said, “I am extremely pleased with myself and my band mates for scoring so high at the preliminary festival. It is extremely humbling being recognized as one of the top five jazz bands across the state.”

Jackson Liberty High School will host a jazz competition on April 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. Additional information can be found at www.libertylionband.com
